Mackenzie River Delta, Canada, Oct 22, 2005

Size of linked image - 197 KBytes
This image was received on Oct 22, 2005. The Mackenzie River is the longest river in Canada, covering a distance of 1,470 km. The river originates at the Great Slave Lake in the Northwest territories and flows north into the Arctic Ocean. The channel in the well-defined alluvial valley is predominantly braided in nature, but meandering is present in the lower part of the valley. Average annual discharge is 8,561 m3/sec with a maximum of 18,188 m3/sec and a minimum of 2,873 m3/sec. Discharge is peaked because of the rapid thaw in the drainage basin. The flood season lasts from May through September during which time the monthly discharge generally exceeds 10,000 m3/sec. The month of March has the lowest discharge (2,873 m3/sec).
The image clearly shows the turbid (green to brown) freshwater runoff into the blue Arctic Ocean and some offshore ice formation.

This Landsat 5 image was received at the NOAA/NESDIS FCDAS Gilmore Creek satellite ground station near Fairbanks, Alaska, and shipped over a high speed network by UAF-GINA to the USGS National Center for EROS in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The image was then processed at EROS, picked up by GINA, and delivered to the Alaska Fire Service. Turnaround time was less than 24 hours. More information regarding this collaboration is available in this news release.
