Oct 12, 2009 Network outages week of Oct 12th
All this week (Oct12th -> 16th) there scheduled network outages for the University of Alaska Fairbanks which will affect GINA services. You can expect to see short outages between the hours of 1am and 6am. Unexpected outages outside of those hours have already been seen but hopefully will not continue.

We have Web Coverage Service with a number of elevation data sets in it, including the NED, the ASTER DEM covering Alaska, and several smaller high resolution datasets. For more information please see our forum post for details and instructions for ArcMap. We would appreciate any feedback.

UPDATE: Landsat 5 data for Alaska goes operational. Data is available for order.
The USGS National Center for Earth Resources Observation Systems (EROS), NOAA/NESDIS Fairbanks Command & Data Acquisition Station (FCDAS), and UA Geographic Information Network of Alaska (GINA) have teamed up to provide Landsat 5 data for Alaska this summer. Landsat 5 is an Earth imaging satellite with many applications, including emergency response and resource management. The Landsat program has gathered a continuous set of data since 1972, making it one of the most successful and widely used satellite remote sensing programs.

The University of Alaska is running ads in Alaska newspapers to thank ConocoPhillips and BP for their generous contributions to the University of Alaska Foundation. GINA is featured in the ads for providing real-time satellite images to Alaska s firefighters as they battle wildfires.

Satellite images showing the extensive fires and smoke covering much of the state are available. These images were received by the GINA satellite reception ground station at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

UA President Mark Hamilton recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that brings together the University's Geographic Information Network of Alaska, U.S. Geological Survey's Alaska Science Center, and the State of Alaska's Department of Natural Resources to cooperate in support of The National Map.

GINA's International Observatory of the North (ION) has created an animation showing fires detected by the MODIS satellite sensor for the region centered on ION's Fairbanks receiving station. Fires in Alaska, eastern Siberia, western Canada, and as far south as northern California. This project was done in cooperation with BLM's Alaska Fire Service.
