AlaskaView is part of a larger, nationwide program known as AmericaView. The purpose of AmericaView is to provide satellite data for educational, research, and workforce development uses.
GINA is the Alaska member of AmericaView. The program has funded GINA to provide satellite images to many Alaska-based institutions including the Alaska Fire Service and the Alaska Geospatial Data Clearinghouse, as well as to develop new image browsing tools such as Swathviewer.
Recent efforts by AlaskaView have been focused on outreach activities and development of web application tools that make accessing remote sensing and GIS datasets easier. Two of the most recent projects can be found on the gina-alaska github project pages makemap and what-where.
AlaskaView is also part of a 10 state view effort to create the AmericaView Multi-State Server (AVMMS) WMS server (http://wms.americaview.org) to host participating state view's datasets and provide a hosting platform for the developed tools like the makemap WMS extraction too.
